Arctic Ice

The ice in the Arctic is rapidly disappearing, and the region may have its first completely ice-free summer by 2040. Polar bears and other indigenous cultures are already suffering from sea-ice loss.

Glaciers and mountain snows are rapidly melting. Right now, Montana's Glacer National Park has only 27 glaciers. It had 150 in 1910.

Coral Reefs

Coral reefs are highly sensitive to small changes in water temperature. Up to 70% of some reefs died due to bleaching (or stress) in 1998 because of temperature changes.

Happy Earth Day Print E-mail

April 22nd is officially Earth Day, which hopes to bring more awareness to global environmental concerns. If everyone can do their part today (and everyday), by reducing electricity use, using less water, walking instead of driving, and making choices that are better for the Earth, then we will make considerable progress in dealing with the challenges of global warming.

The prospect of reducing greenhouse emissions and combating global warming seems like an impossible task, but if everybody made even just the smallest choices to lower their home temperatures by one degree and wear a sweater, or turning off the air conditioning for an afternoon, or switching to a push lawn mower instead of a gas mower, their decisions would contribute to thre greater good.

We can't tackle the problems of global warming alone, but if we do the little things right, and make smart energy-conscious decisions, we can slow down, or even stop the forward motion of global warming.

Do you part, big or small, even if for Earth Day, today, and you will be helping to heal the planet. Happy Earth Day!
