Arctic Ice

The ice in the Arctic is rapidly disappearing, and the region may have its first completely ice-free summer by 2040. Polar bears and other indigenous cultures are already suffering from sea-ice loss.

Glaciers

Glaciers and mountain snows are rapidly melting. Right now, Montana's Glacer National Park has only 27 glaciers. It had 150 in 1910.

Coral Reefs

Coral reefs are highly sensitive to small changes in water temperature. Up to 70% of some reefs died due to bleaching (or stress) in 1998 because of temperature changes.

Simple Smart Decisions For Conserving Water Print E-mail

reduce water consumptionWater conservation is important to everyone, but not everyone takes into consideration the value of the amount the water they flush and drain every day. You know that if you had to pay for every litre of water you used, it's likely you would be a lot more conscious of how much water you used every day.

But it shouldn't have to come to that. You wouldn't need to be fined or charged for all the water you use if you were more aware of the value of water, and really, it doesn't take that many changes in your attitude to be able to decrease your water consumption significantly. Items like low-flow toilets might be considered expensive to many people, but placing a couple of bricks in your toilet's water reservoir can reduce the amount of water used by a 1,000 litres a year! Other people choose to flush their toilets only when "necessary", minimizing the number of times they waste water.

Turn Off Your Faucets

There are other simple solutions for reducing water consumption, such as turning off your faucet when you brush your teeth, and only using it to rinse; installing water-saving shower heads, devices that still provide the necessary water pressure you need, but offering it in different measures of flows without affecting your shower experience.

Don't Let Water Drain Away

Car washing is often necessary, but having hose attachments will prevent water from flowing when you're not using it. Or washing your car on your front lawn (with organic cleaners) can save you the need to sprinkle later on. Minimize your use of wash water by washing your vehicle in the morning or the evening, when the sun isn't urging you to use more water because of the quicker drying.

There are plenty of other solutions for saving water. How long do you run your tap waiting for the cold water to come out? Instead, fill up a filtered jug in your refrigerator. It'll save that needless flow-water, and take up some space in your refrigerator, reducing the energy required to cool the rest of the items.

It doesn't take much to reduce the amount of water you use. And when you multiple that savings by thousands of homes, you can quickly realize how much of this precious resource can be conserved, put aside for a non-rainy day.
