Arctic Ice

The ice in the Arctic is rapidly disappearing, and the region may have its first completely ice-free summer by 2040. Polar bears and other indigenous cultures are already suffering from sea-ice loss.

Glaciers

Glaciers and mountain snows are rapidly melting. Right now, Montana's Glacer National Park has only 27 glaciers. It had 150 in 1910.

Coral Reefs

Coral reefs are highly sensitive to small changes in water temperature. Up to 70% of some reefs died due to bleaching (or stress) in 1998 because of temperature changes.

Temperature Change

Average world temperatures have risen 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit (0.8 degree Celsius) in the last one hundred years, much of it in the recent decade.

Double-glazed windows can significantly reduce heating costs in your home by keeping the heat in and the cold out. If double-glazed windows are too expensive, even clear-plastic coatings over your older windows can help.

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs Are No Joke Print E-mail

A twisty compact fluorescent light bulb
Everyone in the world probably knows many variations of that old joke: "How many xxx does it take to change a light bulb?". The joke never gets old, but with energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) becoming more and more common, the joke writers might need to come up with some new material.

Compact fluorescent light bulbs (also called "compact fluorescent lamps" and "low-energy light-bulbs") use far less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs, and surprisingly give off more light, mostly due to their unique "spiral" design. This twisty style of light bulb has a slightly lower efficiency than the tubular fluorescent light bulbs, mostly due to the extremely thick layer of phosphor on the lower side of the twist part of the bulb, which allows the light to be distributed outwards.

In fact, CFLs can not only save you money in energy, but they are often rated higher in hours of life expectancy, which are often a concern with traditional bulbs. Studies have shown that a single compact fluorescent light bulb can save over thirty dollars in electricity costs over the lamp's lifetime compared to an incandescent bulb and save nearly 2,000 (two thousand) times its own weight in greenhouse gases--and that's no joke!
